The Garden of Small Beginnings by Abbi Waxman
A book about books, gardening and starting over.
The premise: Lilian is a textbook illustrator, a single mother and a widow. Luckily, she’s able to make light of her recent mental breakdown and is focused on getting on with life, just as her boss chooses her to illustrate a series of flower and vegetable guides. The job sounds easy enough, until she learns that the group commissioning the books is requiring that she enroll in a gardening class to understand what she’s drawing.
She convinces her daughters and her sister to join her, meets the quirky group of wanna-be gardeners and the cute instructor… and I bet the story just wrote itself after that. What more could you need to put together a great story?
There are serious moments as we read about her loss, laugh out loud moments as she befriends this motley group of gardeners and inspiring moments as she faces her fears and creates her new life. And of course, there’s a little bit of a love story too, just for good measure.
This is another feel good, happy book. Grab your gardening gloves and dig in!
I love the cover art, but I’m not sure the storyline is my cup of tea. I could use more feel-good books in my life though! 🙂
