The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee
I’m not a huge fan of young adult novels, however, I have picked up some good ones lately. The Downstairs Girl is best described as young adult historical fiction that opened my eyes to racial issues beyond those of black vs white.
The Premise – Jo is a young Asian woman working as a lady’s maid (after being unfairly fired from her job as a milliner’s assistant) in Atlanta, Georgia. This outspoken young woman ends up writing an advice column for the local paper under the name of Miss Sweetie, which as you can imagine, raises some eyebrows.
This is an uplifting story of perseverance and strength, told in a light-hearted, humorous and sweet manner.
